Information about Chania
The Prefecture of Chania, situated in the westernmost sector of Crete and is rich in natural beauty. Its prominent aspects are the wild mountain range of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), the sea embracing the Prefecture on three sides, and its warm and dry climate.
The fertile land beside the sea, abundant running waters, mild climate and natural fortifications constituted ideal conditions for the population of the region from the Neolithic period and for the development of a great civilization. A civilization rich in many aspects, due to strong influences and effects from various people of the Mediterranean basin, as the island is the crossroads for their sea transports. Traces of all the historic periods have been left behind in the region's rich architectural heritage, and memories of these periods have been kept alive in the traditions of the inhabitants.
The landscape of alternating mountain ranges, valleys and beautiful shores on the one hand, and archaeological sites, architecture (Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman and Neo-Classical) on the other constitute, along with the uniqueness of character and traditions of the inhabitants and their warm hospitality, a unique place for recreation and travel.
Today, the Prefecture of Chania is separated into seven municipalities, Municipality of Chania, Municipality of Apokoronas, Municipality of Platanias, Municipality of Kissamos, Municipality of Kandanos - Selino, Municipality of Sfakia and Municipality of Gavdos island. The capital is Chania, a beautiful, picturesque coastal city which has kept alive the Cretan popular traditions and hospitality.
